The Little Comets have been one of my favourite British Bands for the last two years, consistently putting out dittys as charming as they are catchy it only seems fair that 2011 should be the Year of the Little Comets and with the release of their debut “In Search Of Elusive Little Comets” (more on this later) it may just be. The band were kind enough to answer a few questions i had about almost everything earlier in the week so here it is:
(oh and below theres a free download from their management as well)
Little Comets - Joannacapella:
Hey Little Comets, First can I just say how much a love the songs personally especially one night in October (Which I make a point of playing on the last Sunday of every October at midnight). Moving away from that strange habit and to a more normal interview how did the band get together?
Thanks a lot, that sounds like a very literal appreciation of our music but we like it…. Me and Michael are brothers and starting writing songs together when we were 7 and 8. He would record them and send the tapes to local radio stations… We met Mark and Matt when we were working in a greengrocers, our eyes crossed over courgettes and David Bowie!
Debut Album “In Search of Elusive Little Comets” is out next January, why’s their been such a massive wait for this hugely anticipated LP?
Hopefully it is hugely anticipated haha…!? (it is honest) We recorded the album ourselves a while back and were all ready to release it but then an evil man rang up from Columbia (our old record label) and basically said: you can’t make us enough money so we can’t put your album out. After the initial disappointment we found a new label that allowed us to be very independent (we’d spend months arguing with Columbia about the fact they wanted us to sound more like Kei$ha with a big US radio sound…) and that’s were we are today…
Strangely the first search I did of “In Search of Elusive Little Comets” came up with a 1988 astronomy article, this where the “intriguing” album title came from? Are little comets closet scientists? Or is this whole band just a scheme to promote the works of 80’s intellectuals?
Yep… Mickey is a scientist so being a fan of proofs and theorems he likes to logicise everything into an iterative process. We all just fit around his faculties! Also I like sentences so this makes a good fit for an album title. Combined with Mark’s love of hygiene and Matt’s chagrin, it seems apt…
As I’ve started along the lines of the slightly
ridiculous interview I feel I may as well continue, what’s the little Comets favourite Christmas tune and thinking of this are you ever tempted to release a little festive ditty?
Ah no, absolutely never. Although that said we are doing our own advent calendar this year… Using up nice leftovers and festiveish ideas we are going to do something every day of December for people who like our music, whether it be a free download, a decorated pair of shoes or a Christmas poem by Matt.
Your songs swing from the upbeat (One Night in October) to melancholy (Isles), do you feel more comfortable writing one style over the other or is this musical width just a feature of the Little Comets?
I think with writing we tend to play and record whatever happens. We get influenced from places, stories, accidental bits of music and books so I suppose we end up singing about the thoughts swishing about in our heads at a given time. Hopefully that makes sense and doesn’t sound too abstract or deliberately aloof…
Isles is the first single from the debut, any heads up on what the next one will be?
Yes: Joanna at the end of January… you can watch the video of it at YouTube.com/littlecomets <http://YouTube.com/littlecomets> ! Any plugs like?
Big thanks to The Little Comets for all the help with the interview and expect to hear mnore from these fellas (alongside an album review) in 2011,
P.
