Who: Young Rival
Why We Care: Guitar music is currently going through a bit of a grunge/surf-rock phase. We’re loving it and bands like Childhood and Jaws have been flooding these pages with incredible tracks for the last year or so. It’s a surfeit of excellence rather than a period of dreary doldrums but it gets a bit tedious, especially when every other band we get sent are half-baked lof-fi college kids doing weak impressions of Swim Deep.
Hamilton’s (Canada) Young Rivals were a welcome relief from that deluge. Their sound is frantically upbeat, it draws more from the Royal Bangs/ Tokyo Police Club reservoir than it does from Wavves and co. Their choruses are ecstatic, their guitars are perky and their vocals are a welcome break from Birmingham pre-teens, raised on snap-backs and happy-meals, mumbling about the beach. Stream their latest Lp, Stay Young, below and keep an eye out for them on the festival circuit this summer.
